About 2 weeks ago, I had the pleasure to attend the Conservation Federation of Missouri Media Camp that was hosted by Lilley's Landing on beautiful Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri. This was a time for folks that are outdoor writers, podcaster, social media influencers, and others to get together to learn more about conservation-related topics that are taking place in the state of Missouri. Between learning sessions, we were treated to some guided fishing trips. I was assigned to share a boat with Darren Sadler of Mozark Fishscapes for the morning as well as the afternoon session and I couldn't have been happier with my assignment. I have been able to share the water with Darren on more than one occasion and each instance ends with smiles and stories.
The weather forecast for our day together was warm air temperatures and clear skies. The water generation schedule for the day was low but fairly consistent. If you have ever fished at Lake Taneycomo before, you know that the water schedule is as important as the weather forecast. Both play a vital role in what the fish are going to feed on and where they are going to be located. Right off the bat, Darren had a plan and it worked to perfection all day long!
Darren's plan was to throw size 16-22 midges under strike indicators near the bank and in areas that had depth transitions. I also had the chance to share the boat with my buddy Milo with the morning and a young lady named Taylor in the afternoon. All day long, the bite was steady. There was rarely a long pause in the action and that helped me maintain my focus. I find myself missing fish after longer lulls because my attention seems to wander. It didn't have a chance to wander on this particular day.
We caught quite a few stockers in the 12 inch range but Milo wound up with a fish that was around 17 inches long. I was fortunate enough to land a 19 inch female in the morning and a 19 inch male in the afternoon. The male put up a herculean fight that lasted around 5 minutes! I landed that one on a size 22 midge, 2 pound line, and even avoided a large log that he tried to get me wrapped around. To say it was a heck of a day would be a gross understatement.
If you ever get a chance to hit the water with Darren, you are going to end up with a few things. Number one, you will be happy because Darren's passion and enthusiasm is constant and contagious. Two, you will walk away with some knowledge. I've been fishing Lake Taneycomo for years and I always learn a few things from Darren. Finally, you going to have a smile on your face because Darren is going to make sure you catch fish! You'll probably come away with a story or two as well...just like I did!
