March Midges

What a great video about catching trout on midges....dry midges.  While there is some great info and amazing footage, I still have to wonder how in the heck you keep an eye on your fly and how do you know when you have a strike?

Show Me Fish- Send In Your Pictures

As the waters continue to warm around Missouri, please consider sending in some pictures of your catches.  For example, I ran across a couple of young men last weekend that were catching trout at Jesse James Fairgrounds in Kearney, Missouri.  They were gracious enough to send me some pictures of their quarry and will now be immortalized on the Show Me Fish Page!  Send those pictures to showmeflyguy@gmail.com and watch your fishing legend grow!  You can also find Hunter (the gentleman in the gray shirt) on Instagram a@kick_bass_fishing12.

So here's a quick a test for you; how many of these fish can you identify before you see their names.  Watch out though, the names are above the pictures so scroll past them quickly.  Post your score in the comments section below too!

Pat Cohen's "Big Ben" Tied by: Ryan Cooper

I saw this pattern the other day and had to share it with all of my fellow mousers.  It's actually a pretty simple pattern until you get to sculpting the head which is where I would struggle.  Mice are cool but articulated mice are cooler!

Lake Taneycomo Spring Break Trip

Last week I was able to get down to Lake Taneycomo during my spring break that I am afforded by the school district that I work for.  To say that I was insanely excited about wading and fly fishing the Trophy Area below Table Rock Dam would be a gross understatement.  All those hopes and elation came tumbling down when they opened all the flood gates the day before I left.  There was a flow advisory on upper Lake Taneycomo most of the time I was there so fly fishing wasn't an option...plus I don't own a boat.  Instead, I was relegated to fishing off a dock at Lilley's Landing (where we were staying) and bouncing baits off the bottom of the lake.  For those of you that have done this, it is a little tricky to get the hang of.  With that in mind, my epic fly fishing film got turned into a bottom bouncing tutorial.  I hope this helps make bottom fishing in current a little easier and takes a little of the frustration out of the technique.

Great Time to Brush Up on Your Fly Casting

I saw this video on The Fiberglass Manifesto the other day and I had to share it.  It's great for beginners as well as those of us veterans that could use a refresher course.

Hada Creek Crawler

For some strange reason last week, I kept running across a fly called The Hada Creek Crawler.  So I did some research and this is what I found.  There are a few videos and a nice write-up from Dally's Ozark Fly Fisher.  I hope this becomes a new staple in your fly box and boat a few more fish.

Marabou Clouser

I am so sorry!  I totally forgot to post yesterday.  I was going to, I promise, but then I went shed hunting.  I found one, thanks for asking, and that distracted me from posting.  So in an effort to make up for my slip-up, here is a rare Saturday post.

When I saw the title for this video, it blew my mind for a few reasons.  For one, I haven't had much luck with clousers (mainly because I just don't fish them much but should) and for two, I don't care for tying with bucktail/deer hair. I'm getting better but when I saw the chance to substitute something for deer, I got pretty wound up.  Then I got to thinking, what else could I sub in?  Ostrich seems like an interesting idea.  Maybe a rabbit strip through the hook point and opposite the dumbell eyes.  Maybe marabout on both sides instead of just one.  Playing around with this pattern is on my list of things to do, but hopefully it gave you a few things to think about like it did with me.

Millennials Go Fishing

I saw this video the other day on Moldy Chum so first of all, they deserve the credit for originally posting this. Second, Millenials get a lot of criticism from other generations and sometimes the media (which is run by other generations, just saying). Maybe other generations have just decided to pick on them to make ourselves feel better by putting them down. If you watch this video, it might give you a new perspective on this up and coming generation and might even change your perspective in regards to their perceived reputation. It sure gave me some hope for Millenials. Maybe they aren’t so bad after all...but they still need to stay off my lawn!

Streamer Chronicles- Matt Grajewski

These videos are so cool. It’s interesting to hear others’ stories about the how’s, why’s, and where’s that made them the fly fishermen that they are today. Sure, these guys are wildly successful anglers, but I think everyone has a unique story to tell that sets them apart from other anglers.

Fly Tying Tutorial: Brita Fordice's Body Tubing Baitfish

This is an incredibly unique fly that I just had to share. I’ve never seen anything like this and can’t decide if I dig the creativity or just think it is weird. Check it out and decide for yourself.

Fly Fishing Picture Collage Video

As fishermen, we have stories to tell and share.  We have memories that will last us lifetimes.  We love hearing other folks' stories and revel in our experiences outdoors.  For those reasons, I was inspired to share with you how I keep in touch with all of those adventures and never let them get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that tries to conceal or overlap them.

I recently created a how-to video that I just uploaded to my YouTube page.  It shows how to take a picture frame as well as old/new fishing pictures and turn them into a large collage.  I have done this many times before and I have never been disappointed by the results.  They always flood my mind and heart with amazing memories of time on the water and with friends/family.  It takes a little time, planning, and creativity but it is worth it in the end, I promise.

Ozarks on the Fly | VOL2 |

Blug Line Media recently released its second installment of "Ozarks on the Fly".  It is every bit as good as volume one, and if you know much about trout fishing in Missouri, you have probably heard of Crane Creek and it's population of McCloud Rainbow Trout.  If you have no idea what you just read, then you have an even better reason to watch this video.

Please consider giving a like and subscribing to this channel.  It only has 96 subscribers and if we want more content like this, then lets show them some appreciation!

Trout Cam

Happy Opening Day of Trout Season!  More than likely, you fall into one of two camps.  One way of thinking about opening day is that it is a shoulder to shoulder battleground and what some would describe as "combat fishing".  Another way to look at it is that Opening Day is a long-running Missouri tradition that brings people together to share an experience that they all love.  Regardless of your stance, here is a link to the trout cam at Bennett Spring State Park.  It is through Weaver's Tackle Store which is conveniently located near the park.  They also have great fishing reports as well!
