A Recap of my Cast and Blast Trip

Wow!  What a weekend!  There was a youth soccer game, a surprise birthday party, a church confirmation, a family dinner and a shrimp boil.  What you are probably most interested in though is the fishing and turkey hunting that took place.  Let's start off with the turkey hunting.

First of all, it was a beautiful morning.  My buddy Corey and I heard turkeys gobble in the roost and on the ground.  We had a coyote come in and check out our decoys and saw plenty of deer.  We heard owls, saw an owl, and heard crows irritate turkeys.  We saw one hen but never caught a glimpse of a Jake or Tom.  It was a great morning to be immersed in nature and to be an unseen observer to animal behavior!

As for the fishing it was...odd.  I couldn't figure out of bass were in the shallows because the pond I was fishing was high or if they were sitting on beds.  Some bass that I caught looked healthy with full bellies but one looked a little thinner and might have already laid eggs.  Regardless, I couldn't get a fly to them because of all the vegetation that they were in on a consistent basis.  I caught a few fish on spinnerbaits and caught a few streamers.  What made this situation continue with the theme of being odd was the fact that I hooked more bass on a small jig under an indicator when I was bluegill fishing.  I only landed one of the bass out of the 7 that I hooked.

It was out of the ordinary to only land 6 or 7 bass out of the pond that I was fishing, but I did land 4 bass that were between 2-3 pounds and these fish had a purpose.  My cousin that lives about a quarter of a mile from the pond has his own pond behind his house.  In his pond, he has a bunch of stunted bass.  I'm guessing that he doesn't have enough of a food source for these fish and that the pond would benefit from having fewer, but larger fish.  We discussed me catching some big bluegill to maybe eat some of the bass eggs and stop them from reproducing but I couldn't catch any bluegill which was again...odd.  What I DID manage to do was transport that 2-3 pounders I caught to his overpopulated pond.

I am completely aware that what I did is not a solution to the problem.  However, I am hopeful that this was a first step towards improving the population of both ponds.  The better pond now has fewer 2-3 pound bass competing for food which will hopefully help the big fish get bigger.  In the lesser pond, hopefully the transplants will eat come of the smaller bass.  This could cause the big fish to get bigger and the small fish to have a lower population.  In other words, hopefully the pond took a step towards a better balance but more transplants need to be made.  There probably needs to be A LOT of bluegill introduced to the pond as a food source as well if they aren't there already which I am uncertain about.

Aside from the hunting and fishing, Corey and I ate like kings, relatively speaking.  I tend to just cook hot dogs over a fire, chow down on Doritos, and throw some mini donuts down my neck.  Corey puts forth A LOT more effort than me.  We ate steak burgers on Friday night and had a breakfast scramble on bagels on Saturday.  Corey even made coffee on a Coleman stove prior to our hunt too.  Since we fell asleep around 11:00 and woke up around 4:00, I made an exception for my anti-coffee policy.  I'm not sure if I will get the chance to get back to the turkey woods or any farm ponds in the next couple of weeks, but the experiences that I got to enjoy will hopefully fill my spirit until the next adventure.

A Good Time on the Water with my Middle School Fly Fishing Club

Last Tuesday, I got to take my middle school club fly fishing at Legacy Community Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri.  This is a place that I have taken club members before because the crappie move into the dam at the same time every year and it seems like the weather/water conditions do not seem to matter.  What I have noticed over the last few years is that the lake is getting harder and harder to fish from the dam.  Weeds, trees, and various plants have started to grow and clog up the bank.  This year, it was even difficult to roll cast.  We had to get creative and thankfully, our flexibility paid off.

It is important to remember that most of these students have only been fly fishing since September of 2024.  While almost all of them are proficient with an overhead cast, they haven't worked much on roll casting or any other type of casting.  When I saw all the brush and limitations that it was going to impose, I knew I had to come up with some strategy to help the kids out.  After some thought and internal debate, I arrived on a cast that was simple enough to learn quickly and effective to get a fly to fish that weren't far off the bank.  A bow and arrow cast seemed like the right tool for the job.

If you aren't familiar with a bow and arrow cast, it's pretty simple.  You turn your rod upside down, let out a little bit of line, and pull the fly back towards your face like an archer pulls back a bow.  All that's left is to point your rod and your spot and let your fly go.  The kids thought it was a fun technique and picked up on it really quickly.  More importantly, it was effective!  The crappie were located only a few feet off the bank and easy to reach with a "slingshot cast" as some of the kids called it.  In total, we caught over 150 crappie and the kids had a great time.  One parent even said to me, "I see how it is.  You saved the best trip for last."  While this was indeed our last fishing trip of the school year, I couldn't have expected the amount of success that we had.

What I've Been Up To Lately

Let me lead off with the fact that I haven't been fishing lately.  Between wet and windy weather compiled with drastic changes in temperature, fishing conditions have been volatile.  When the weather gets coupled with my oldest son's choir performances and my youngest son's piano and soccer hobbies, it's been hard to squeeze in some time to hit the water.  I've also been working on some projects around my house an in my yard on top of running a small yard mowing business with my oldest son.  So yeah, things have been too busy to go fishing, unfortunately.  However, fishing is never far from my mind and I will be hitting the water soon.

As a matter of fact, I am taking my middle school fly fishing club on a short fishing trip this evening.  If this lake stays true to form, we should be catching a lot crappie with most of them being pretty small.  Later on this week, my buddy Corey and I are going to hopefully have a short cast and blast trip up at our family farm.  We plan to turkey hunt early on Saturday morning and hopefully squeeze in some bass fishing on Friday night and late Saturday morning.

I have also been making a few fly fishing related items on my 3D printers.  I made a 3D printed Darth Vader business card/pen holder, a bunch of small fly boxes, and some strike indicators.  I also made a fly rod holster that I hope to try out tonight.  It looks like a great gadget to hold your rod while changing flies or replacing tippet/leader.  Finally, I am proud to say that I have been selling a few of my 3D printed items.  I sent a Jaws-inspired keychain that has a retro hotel vibe to a nice lady in South Carolina.

I'm excited for life to slow down a little bit and spend some highly anticipated time on the water.  Hopefully my next post will include actual fish or at least fishing related info.  Until then, I hope you are able to get outside and enjoy some spring weather and activities.  The heat of summer will be here sooner rather than later so soak this season up while you can!

How to Make a Shadow Box of Flies (Whether You Tied Them or Not!)

If you like projects and displaying flies that you have tied or flies that you have received from others, this might be a fun display to create.  Shadow boxes are a great way to display all kind of fly fishing related items but this one is unique for a few reasons.  First, the patterns are beautiful and well crafted.  Second, the fact that some of the materials from the flies came from the first blacktail deer that the creator harvested makes them even more special.  Aside from just displaying special fly patterns, you could display flies that caught memorable fish or to show your progressions as a fly tyer.  Either way, this is a pretty cool project that I hope to take on one day!

My First Book is Now Available in the Etsy Store

Recently, I ordered some copies of my book to sell at the Tri-Lakes Fly Fishing Expo.  I had a few copies left over and decided that I am going to try to sell them in the online fly shop.  If you haven't bought a copy and want one but don't want to go through Amazon, feel free to head over to my Etsy store and pick one up.  If you don't want to go through that, feel free to email me at showmeflyguy@gmail.com and I'm sure we can work something out.  I would be happy to take a check, use Venmo, or PayPal.  Heck, I would even be happy to deliver you a copy if you live in the Kansas City area!

Rainbow Fly Shop- The Only Fly Shop in the Kansas City Area!

Free hands-on fly tying instruction on Saturday, April 26 from 1-4 pm!  Materials and tools provided!  fly tying classes are also offered on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30pm!
Call Rainbow Fly Shop at 816-886- 6502 with questions!

Yes, you read that correctly.  Kansas City only has one fly shop in the area and that store is Rainbow Fly Shop which is located at 4261 Shrank Dr. in Independence Missouri.  I have known Matt, the owner for over 10 years now and I am proud to call him my friend as well.  I have bought rods, reels, and fly tying materials from Rainbow Fly Shop over the years and I hope to be a patron a lot longer.  I made that last statement because there have been an alarming number of fly shops close in the last few months.

First, K and K fly shop in Overland Park, Kansas closed on Dec. 31, 2024.  Second, Plateau Fly Shop in Springfield, Missouri, closed last year too.  Even the well known Dally's Ozark Fly Fisher closed in Cotter Arkansas closed late last year.  The only reason that I can come up with for the closings is that fly shops are struggling to compete with online businesses.  Maybe it is hard for them to compete with the pricing and convenience that online businesses offer.  I can't argue against those things or I would be a hypocrite.  What I can state is that I love fly shops and I don't want them to disappear.

I've been to a fair amount of fly shops during my life.  Some have been small but well stocked.  Some have had a certain aura to them that made them feel inviting and relaxed.  Other fly shops have felt snooty and luxurious.  Rainbow Fly Shop has a different feel.  It feels welcoming and for lack of a better term, warm.  I don't mean the air temperature, I just mean the atmosphere.  Matt is laid back and easy to talk to while still being extremely knowledgeable.  It isn't difficult to strike up a conversation with other patrons and you'll probably learn something from them as well.  Rainbow Fly Shop carries, used rods/reels, new rods/reels, and a lot of fly tying equipment.

So if you want to visit a fly shop with a great atmosphere, quality equipment, and some gear that you didn't even know you needed, please visit Rainbow Fly Shop.  I know the store would appreciate your patronage and business.  If we want a fly shop in Kansas City for the foreseeable future, we need to give it the business it needs to stay open.  I hope you stop by, maybe make a purchase, and spend some time with folks that have the same passion that you have.

Final Reminder: The Tri-Lakes Fly Fishing Expo Starts Today and Continues Tomorrow!

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Tri-Lakes Fly Fishing Expo begins today and continues tomorrow at the Benson Center in Clinton, Missouri.  I will be a vendor at the show tomorrow and hope to see you there!

If you have never been to the Tri-Lakes Fly Fishing Expo, let me give you a brief rundown in list form.
  1. First of all, it's free!
  2. There are fly tyers that are demonstrating their skills and answering questions.
  3. There are vendors selling flies, fly tying materials, guided trips, and a bunch of other stuff.
  4. There is awesome, home cooked food for purchase.
  5. Everyone there loves fly fishing and great to talk to.  I mean it.  I have yet to meet one grouchy person or one person that wasn't fun to talk to.
  6. There is a live auction as well as a silent auction to raise money for the Tri-Lake Fly Fishing Club.
  7. There are seminars put on by experts and it is nearly impossible to not learn SOMETHING!
  8. You just might run into someone that you know and you will definitely have a chance to meet new folks to learn from.
I'm sure that I am forgetting a few things because this show is so much darn fun and I look forward to it every year.  This year (and for the first time) the show will extend over two days.  However, if you're wanting to see me (or avoid me), I will only be there on Saturday.  I wish I could take off Friday, April 11, but I have too much going on.  I will definitely be there on Saturday, April 12 and it would be a pleasure to see you and chat about fly fishing.  I will have books, buttons, flies, and other things to sell there but it's a low pressure sell.  I enjoy just talking to others and hearing others' stories as much as I like moving merchandise.  So if you go to the show, please introduce yourself as it is always nice to meet folks that share a passion for fly fishing!

The MeatEater Crossword Puzzles

Link: https://www.themeateater.com/games

I'm not a big crossword puzzle fan, but I do love the outdoors.  When I ran across some crossword puzzles on the MeatEater website though, well, I guess I became a crossword puzzle fan.  I'm not sure if you will dig these or not but wanted to pass them along just in case you might.  There are crossword puzzles over fishing, hunting, the outdoors, national parks, and a few other topics.  You can play them online or, if you are "old school" like me, you can print them out and write them in pencil.  If you have more confidence than me, bust out a pen.  Either way, I hope you dig the puzzles and maybe learn a few things in the process!

If You Dig This Blog, Here's Another One to Check Out!

If you follow this blog routinely, you know that I try to support an organization called Frontline Fly Fishing when I have the opportunity.  Frontline Fly Fishing's mission is, "To teach and develop fly fishing and related skills to promote healing for current and former military, first responders and others."  To elaborate a little more, this quote appears on the Frontline Fly Fishing website as well:  "Our community brings together first responders from all walks of life—firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and combat veterans. Through fly fishing events, we provide a peaceful retreat from their demanding roles, fostering connections and offering a much-needed respite."

The organization is ran by and made up of some of the nicest, most caring, and thoughtful individuals you might ever meet.  They have a passion for fly fishing as well as helping others get through some difficult moments.  Recently, I was honored by members of the organization in a way that I never expected.  I was informed that educators are also included as first responders.  What that means for me personally is that I am no longer just a supporter, but I am now a member.  It is an honor to be a part of an organization that is made up of such amazing people that I consider mentors as well as heroes.

I apologize for getting a little carried away but my feelings for Frontline Fly Fishing are strong.  The second point of this post is to inform folks about the new website that Frontline Fly Fishing has launched.  You don't have to be a member of the group to read the fly tying tutorials, support Frontline Fly Fishing, or purchase from the store.  The site is updated regularly and so is the blog that you can find on the site as well.  There is a large variety of topics covered on the blog that range from fly tying tools, to fly selection, to different fly rod types.  There are a lot more topics covered on the blog and I highly encourage you to give it a look.  I bet you will find something that interests you.

Milo’s Flies

I met my buddy Milo a few years ago and from our first conversation, I knew we were kindred spirits.  Besides the fact that we both tie flies and fly fish, we also have other interests in the outdoors that go beyond passions and are borderline obsessions.  The more I got to know Milo, the more I knew I could learn a lot from him.  He knows Lake Taneycomo like the back of his hand, stacks and spins deer hair like the pros, and when he is on the water he is locked in and doesn't miss a thing.

When Milo contacted me recently to let me know that he has decided to start selling flies, there was no doubt that his venture was going to be the subject of a blog post.  Milo was not only kind enough to let me post about him and his flies, but he sent me a few to field test as well.  Yes, you can expect a follow up post about these flies but for now, I would encourage you to visit the Facebook page that he has created for his fly tying business.  Feel free to message him through Facebook or email him with custom order inquiries.

I can attest that not only does he know all of the great trout and articulated patterns, but he can tie anything and I mean that literally!  His flies look great with great attention to detail and he uses premium materials.  He's also on Instagram as well as TikTok and you can find those account handles down below.  I know it would mean a lot to him to get some follows and some orders to get the ball rolling on his business.  As someone who has been down this road before, I can attest that every single order to a startup small business is met with excitement and gratitude.  So if you need some flies for some spring or summer fly fishing adventures, you will not regret contacting Milo.  He's easy to talk to, extremely knowledgeable about a lot of bodies of water, and will send you some flies that will catch fish!

My 2,000th Post!

That's right!  2,000 posts!  I can't believe it!  Almost 10 years ago I started this blog because I ran out of pages in my fishing journal.  The library media specialist at the school I worked at suggested that I start a blog and share my fishing experiences with others.  2,000 posts, 712,800 views, and almost 10 years later, I still love posting about my experiences with others.  It has been and will always be my hope that my posts both educate and entertain others.  I'll be honest, if folks like you didn't view my blog and read my posts, I would have quit a long time ago!  The fact that you are reading this right now means a lot to me and I cannot that you enough for your thoughtfulness, time, and energy.  Without you, this little slice of the internet would not exist so please know how grateful I am for you visiting this site.

To commemorate this special occasion, I wanted to share some details about my last fishing excursion.  Last Saturday, Cody (my youngest son), Waylon (my dog), and Justin (a coworker), headed up to our family farm to catch some largemouth.  I wanted to get Cody away from screen time, Waylon to his favorite place on earth, and myself a few more prespawn largemouth in my hands.  Most importantly, I wanted to show my buddy Justin a good time.  He is still new to fly fishing but is picking things up quickly.  I was hopeful that he would learn a little more about fishing a big streamer as well as hooking and landing 15-18 inch fish.  I had a plan in my head, and if I'm being honest, I was pretty confident about putting him on some fish.  Later I realized that my abundant confidence might have been borderline arrogance.

The plan was to throw game changers in the shallows and hook some bass that I thought would be in the 2-3 pound range.  This was my strategy because that was what I did about a 10 days prior.  To make a long story short, that plan did not work.  I fished 2/3 of the pond and Justin fished the remaining 1/3 with one fish being caught.  To say I was shocked would be a gross understatement.  Thankfully, Justin decided to switch things up and helped me shed my cloak of stubbornness.

Justin starting fishing the middle of the pond and allowed his fly to sink before he started his retrieve.  And that was when the fun started.  I don't know how many bass he caught with this strategy but it was enough to follow suit.  I started fishing the same way and the takes started for me as well.  At some point, I even switched to a heavier streamer (the Brave) and caught fish with that fly as well.  As the morning waned, so did our bites so phase 3 of our experimentation began.

I felt like we had put our flies in front of a bunch of fish and it was time to switch things up.  We went back to my truck and grabbed some medium heavy action spinning rods with fire tiger spinnerbaits.  I had a feeling that the fish would respond two more flash, motion, a faster retrieve, and more vibration in the water.  By the time we were done fishing, the spinnerbaits landed even more fish than the flies!  This was a reminder to me to be flexible and to abandon a plan if it didn't work.  What started out as a slow and disappointing day turned into "one of those special mornings" because Justin reminded me to be flexible!

We all had a great morning.  Justin learned about streamers, Cody took pictures and talked our ears off, and Waylon ran and played.  I just soaked it all in and landed a few nice bass as well.  On the way home, I started writing this post in my head so it is apparent that I still have a passion for sharing my experiences.  And with that I would like to conclude post number 2,000 with another thank you, a few pictures, and a smile on my face.  While I could keep going on about last Saturday and my gratitude for the views, I will instead bid you a fond farewell...because I need to get to work on post 2,001!
