Yes, you read that correctly. Kansas City only has one fly shop in the area and that store is Rainbow Fly Shop which is located at 4261 Shrank Dr. in Independence Missouri. I have known Matt, the owner for over 10 years now and I am proud to call him my friend as well. I have bought rods, reels, and fly tying materials from Rainbow Fly Shop over the years and I hope to be a patron a lot longer. I made that last statement because there have been an alarming number of fly shops close in the last few months.
First, K and K fly shop in Overland Park, Kansas closed on Dec. 31, 2024. Second, Plateau Fly Shop in Springfield, Missouri, closed last year too. Even the well known Dally's Ozark Fly Fisher closed in Cotter Arkansas closed late last year. The only reason that I can come up with for the closings is that fly shops are struggling to compete with online businesses. Maybe it is hard for them to compete with the pricing and convenience that online businesses offer. I can't argue against those things or I would be a hypocrite. What I can state is that I love fly shops and I don't want them to disappear.
I've been to a fair amount of fly shops during my life. Some have been small but well stocked. Some have had a certain aura to them that made them feel inviting and relaxed. Other fly shops have felt snooty and luxurious. Rainbow Fly Shop has a different feel. It feels welcoming and for lack of a better term, warm. I don't mean the air temperature, I just mean the atmosphere. Matt is laid back and easy to talk to while still being extremely knowledgeable. It isn't difficult to strike up a conversation with other patrons and you'll probably learn something from them as well. Rainbow Fly Shop carries, used rods/reels, new rods/reels, and a lot of fly tying equipment.
So if you want to visit a fly shop with a great atmosphere, quality equipment, and some gear that you didn't even know you needed, please visit Rainbow Fly Shop. I know the store would appreciate your patronage and business. If we want a fly shop in Kansas City for the foreseeable future, we need to give it the business it needs to stay open. I hope you stop by, maybe make a purchase, and spend some time with folks that have the same passion that you have.
