Wipers on Blue Springs Lake

My buddy Austin got into some wipers on a fly last Friday night and I had to pass along the info.  He was fishing off of Blue Springs Lake dam and landed the beautiful 5 pound wiper/hybrid striped bass that you see below.  In all, he caught 6 wipers and 1 white bass.  Aside from the 5 pounder, the rest were in the 2-3 pound range.  He landed them on clousers, sliders, and other baitfish imitations while casting into the southerly wind.  April seems to be the month for catching these guys on a fly from the bank.  The formula seems to be recent rain, wind from the south, and the month of April.  I fished for a little while last night without any luck but I bet they'll be back after the next rainfall!  Feel free to follow Austin on Instagram @flyfishkc or check out his blog at https://www.fly-fish-kc.com/
