A Perfect Day on the Water with Gary's Guide Service

"Gary was on the money that day.  It was a perfect day and never got more than 85 degrees.  We never even broke a sweat."

-my buddy Pat

My buddy Pat and his buddy Brandon recently had a heck of a day on Truman Lake with Gary Price of Gary's Fishing Guide Service.  For those of you that follow this site, you know that I am lucky enough to call Gary a good friend and a heck of a fisherman.  Gary guides for wipers/hybrid striped bass on Truman and has a unique approach to catching this big, aggressive fish.  Gary fishes with his own bucktail jigs (which he ties during the winter).  He also fishes these lures on stout rods that are rigged to downriggers.  Gary puts his lures in front of A LOT of fish over the course of a day and can often inform you when a fish is about to hit.  He's a little bit of a fish whisperer.  I guess you have to be if you are going to be a guide, and an extremely GOOD guide in his case.

On Sunday, July 30, 2017 AD, Pat and Brandon fished from 7 AM-12 PM with Gary and...well I'll let Pat tell the story in his words.

"We caught our first fish was at 8:45.  Between then and 10:00, we caught 3 more.  Gary had said that they had been biting after 9 and he was right.  We got to an area that we had fished earlier in the morning, at about 10:30 and they were off the bottom and they were stacked on top of each other.  Gary said that when these fish come off the bottom and start to stack up, then they are ready to feed.  He could see where they were chasing bait balls.  We caught the next 13 between 10:30-11:30.  The biggest was 11.1 pounds and the smallest was 6 pounds.  We were trolling bucktail jigs with curly tail trailers on downriggers with the chartreuse jigs catching as many as the pink.  We doubled up 4 or 5 times when we went through bait balls and he actually called when fish were going to bite.  And these things were fighters! I had never had a fish pull the drag out before!  I really wasn't expecting it!  Gary uses 20 pound big game line and he said 'You can catch a 20 pound fish on 5 pound line.  It's all in setting the drag.'  At the very end, we had 2 rods in the water and another guy needed one more fish to limit out.  He hooked up on a fish and as I was reeling in the extra rod, I caught a 2-3 pound blue cat.  It was a good day!"

During our conversation, Pat and I both had multiple instances where we swapped stories about Gary's kindness and graciousness.  On this particular day, Gary helped a father and son locate some hybrids and put the 7-8 year boy on a hard fighting wiper.  You see, aside from being an amazing guide, Gary is one of the nicest guys you will probably ever meet.  If you are interested in fishing Truman, or want to go out and catch some of these angry fish, I cannot suggest Gary's services enough!  See the info below for more details and pictures.  Speaking of pictures, check out some of the pictures from Pat and Brandon's day on the water with Gary!  Oh, I almost forgot.  Gary can put you on these fish using a fly rod as well!

Brandon with a big hybrid/wiper.
Brandon again...obviously.

The ubiquitous fisherman's thumb.

That's my buddy Pat.  A handsome devil and a model American.

Officially whacked and stacked.

Gary will clean your catch or help you release your fish if necessary.  Some folks say that they taste as good as crappie!
