Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with an old friend at Krug Park in St. Joseph, Missouri. One of the reasons that I chose to go was because many lakes that have been stocked with trout by the Missouri Department of Conservation are now catch and keep. In Missouri, these lakes are either catch and keep all winter, or catch and release until Feb. 1. I saw Sunday as an opportunity to hit one of these temporary catch and release when it's fish population was still high. It's safe to say that trout populations will start going down today.
The second reason I wanted to fish St. Joseph one more time was because my good buddy T.J. lives in St. Joseph. T.J. and I have been friends since high school and the fact that friends like that are rare is not something that I overlook. T.J. also happens to be a heck of a fly tyer and fly fisher so having something in common helps to keep a friendship strong. Aside from being a good angler, T.J. is a heck or a craftsman. He does some outstanding woodworking and bladesmithing as well. If you're looking for an interesting and humorous follow on Instagram, check him out at peach_tea58.
I've included some pictures of some of the prettier fish that we caught as well as some links to some trout fishing news around Missouri. I caught all of my fish on The Standard. This fly just keeps proving that it is a great fly for stocked lakes. Maybe it can help you catch a few and put some food on the table now that lakes are catch and keep.
I've also included some links to different pieces of information that the Missouri Department of Conservation has released. If you frequent some of these spots or want to fish them soon, you'll want to be aware of the regulations. There are also a couple of links that provide information about how trout are raised at hatcheries in Missouri and about the completed renovations at Roaring River State Park. I hope these are helpful and informative.
